Not for the timer. The web timer works fully in your browser with no sign-up: sparks and streaks are stored locally on your device. An account exists for two things only, appearing on the world leaderboard and carrying your data between devices.

One spark is one minute of focus you actually did. The week runs Monday to Sunday in UTC and the board resets at the start of each one, so no lead becomes unclimbable.

Gems are permanent rewards for the top three places on the weekly Focus Valley leaderboard. After Friday scoring closes, first place earns 10 Gems, second earns 6, and third earns 3. You need an account and a visible leaderboard profile to compete; unlike sparks, Gems stay in your account and never reset.

No, it's opt-in. Without an account you are simply not on it, and every other part of the timer works the same. If you'd rather focus privately, nothing pushes you onto the board.
